A tree surgeon was killed while undertaking works at a domestic property in Park Gate Hailsham during March 2008. Whilst undertaking works within the canopy of the tree an accident occurred causing a fatal injury.
It was reported that Emergency services attended the scene of the accident to find the tree surgeon suspended within the tree from his harness. Paramedics were unable to reach the victim and fire brigade was called to assist. Witnesses reported that it took the emergency services 2 hours to effect a rescue. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
ArbNet contractors are reminded of the importance of aerial rescue. The maintenance of effective emergency procedures is a mandatory requirement under a number of different areas of safety legislation, not least the Work at Height Act 2005.
Failure to have aerial rescue provision on site contravenes best practice and is illegal! Importantly such a failing places the lives of tree surgeons at risk and an accident can have devastating consequences.
